Current Drug Trends

Which substances are currently being identified by law enforcement and treatment personnel, including descriptions and sources, risks, trends, and available treatments.

Medications for Opioid Use Disorder

Comprehensive review of the history of medication use in opioid dependence, focusing on the biological responses of the body to opioids, including tolerance and dependence. The individual medications, treatment modalities, and practice guidelines will be discussed.

Prescription Drug Abuse

Focus on current statistics and trends involving the misuse and abuse of prescription medications. Abuse potential and classification of various drugs regarding risk potential will be evaluated. Pharmacological profiles of drug classes will be explored to assist in understanding mechanisms and clinical symptoms. Challenges in prescribing psychoactive medications are examined.

Psychedelics

Understand the history and content of the psychedelic drug classification and their current application in medicine and therapy. Become familiar with the rich history, legal framework, current and proposed research regarding these substances.

Evolution of Pain Management

An introduction and review of three medicines that are being used in novel ways to address the chronic pain needs of patients.  Kratom (mitragynine), ketamine, and low-dose naltrexone (LDN) are being utilized globally and in increasing numbers in recent years. A thorough understanding of the risks and benefits, as well as the data and evidence gained regarding these medications will be presented.

Medical Marijuana

Review the use of cannabis (medical marijuana) for various conditions. Discuss the status of CBD and THC under state laws. Gain a greater understanding of the plant constituents, dosing and administration, and appropriate use of the medicine. Clarify legal, efficacy, and drug misuse considerations.

Methamphetamine and Stimulants

Information on central nervous system stimulants and their impact on the brain, body, and behavior. A review of the latest data on patterns and trends of stimulant use and availability. Mental and physical health consequences, as well as cognitive impact on development will be reviewed. Effective behavioral treatment interventions and recovery approaches will be discussed.

Pharmacology

Pharmacology involves the mechanisms that are involved in the actions of drugs and their biological effects on the human body. These mechanisms are studied and applied to the drugs of abuse to assist in understanding the effects that could potentially lead to a substance use disorder. Neurochemical signaling, neurotransmitter functions, basic brain functions and role of drugs are presented.

Opioid Abuse

Review of the scope and severity of opioid use disorder (OUD), discuss the history of treating pain with opioids, understand the differences and similarities of the many opiate and opioid medications. Understand the mechanisms that produce the effects within the human brain. Review and understand treatment options available for OUD.
